Couples Coaching – Can a Relationship Coach Help?

Every couple will hit a rough patch one way or another. There are times that they would blame each other for a small problem which would lead to a much bigger one.

This is inevitable for couples unless they both fully understand each other. Misunderstandings and fights are normal occurrences and the only way to lessen is to improve and strengthen the relationship.

But how can a couple achieve a healthier relationship?

Let’s dive right into it:

Couples Coaching

What is a Relationship Coach?

A relationship coach serves as a guide to a couple who are looking to be more open to each other and want their relationship to work as a team.

It is the coach’s goal to uncover a couple’s hidden emotions, help them resolve conflicts by making them realize their own shortcomings and apply what they learn to achieve what they want in the first place.

Couples who want to restore the balance in their relationship  and bring it back on track should look into couples coaching. A good couples coach listens to his clients’ problems and teaches them some strategies that will guide them.

He also supports and encourages couples to be more self-aware as knowing who they really are will uncover their full potential to become a better person for their partner.

Relationship Coaching Tools

A relationship coach will use a variety of powerful tools for every session that will surely be of help in improving a couple’s relationship.

But in order to use these tools effectively, the important thing for a coach to do is to ask the right questions.

Questions a Relationship Coach Asks

Revealing deep and hidden emotions can be stressful for couples undergoing couples coaching. A coach needs to ask questions to get context and have a better understanding on how to resolve their problems. These questions will start from the nature of the relationship, how they handle their past issues, and what problems they are currently facing.

Some examples of what a relationship coach might ask:

  • What do you want in your relationship?
  • What is your goal from relationship coaching?
  • What are your current problems?
  • What are the things that your partner does that annoys you?
  • How do you communicate with each other

Difference Between Couples Coaching and Couples Therapy

Couples coaching and couples therapy seems very similar as both help in resolving conflicts and issues that a couple has. However, there is a difference between the two and it refers to their main goal.

Therapy is more focused on the past and let couples heal from past issues and identify the factors which made them who they are today. It emphasizes more on the emotional side of things and does not have a fixed goal in mind.

On the other hand, couple coaching aims to address the issues and then use them to improve their relationship from then on. The end goal of coaching is to make couples take action towards what they want for their relationship. Couple coaching goals are usually defined by clients and a coach will give them a timeframe to achieve them.

In short, couples therapy exposes the root of the problem while couples coaching aims to solve the problems by taking actions. Also, in therapy, couples will learn to let go of their old burdens, while in coaching, they will learn new ways and perspectives to overcome obstacles.

So those who are hounded by their past should consult a therapist and couples who want to strengthen their relationship should avail the services of a couples coach.

What Does A Couples Coach Do?

Just like any other coach, a couples coach is someone who could help in understanding one’s self and others around him. However, this type of coach not only focuses on an individual but also on the partner.

These are some things that a coach can do for couples:

  • Helps the couple understand each other better
  • Identifies a better path for their relationship
  • Addresses communication problems between a couple
  • Emphasizes self-responsibility rather than blaming the other
  • Restore the relationship back to a balanced one
