9 Strategies For People Who Are Lacking Attention To Detail

If you feel you’re lacking attention to detail, try adopting several of these strategies and see which is the best way to help you overcome this problem.

1. Understand And Respect The Importance Of Attention To Detail

Attention to detail isn’t something that comes naturally. It takes mental effort. This means if we don’t deem it important to pay attention to detail, we won’t. Humans want to conserve mental strain whenever possible.

In the workplace, it’s arguably the role of our managers to ensure we understand the importance of attention to detail in our role.

If you were to land a job as a trainee reporter at any reputable newspaper or magazine, you could bet that you’d be given a stern introduction about the importance of detailed research and error-free work. That’s in spite of the fact that you’ll have been drilled on this continuously throughout your journalism training.

I’d bet you’d get a similar pep talk before you start working in any Michelin-star restaurant, five-star hotel or top-of-the-range manufacturing company.

It’s this constant focus on attention to detail that keeps the reputable businesses reputable and everyone else as also-rans.

Even if the employee doesn’t actually believe that attention to detail is important to create a satisfactory product, it’s possible to make them fear the consequences of screwing up. That can be enough to motivate employees to hand in consistently good work.

2. Do What You Love To Do

There are plenty of vocations and pastimes where attention to detail is objectively not essential. In many of these, you won’t have a boss screaming at you to pay attention. Yet, there are still plenty of individuals who pay fabulous attention to detail in their craft.

These are people who are passionate about what they do. They want to spend every minute of every day improving. They know that’s what’s required to climb right to the very top.

These individuals pay attention to detail because they love their craft. On top of that, they often love the feeling of improving and maybe one day becoming the best in the world.

This arguably applies to anyone at the peak of their creative fields. It may also apply to athletes or anyone with a strong drive to win in a competitive field, such as sales. These people want to pay attention to the small details, if they realise it helps them to win.

It’s very difficult to maintain a strong level of attention to detail when the passion isn’t there. Without passion or someone driving you to improve your attention to detail every day, it’s nigh-on impossible.

3. Gain More Knowledge Of Your Craft

You won’t be able to apply great attention to detail if you don’t know the basics of your craft. In fact, to apply noticeable attention to detail, it’s often required to have mastered the basics, intermediate and advanced steps.

Eminem is globally-known for putting more attention to detail into his lyrics than anyone else in the rap game. But he had to become a master of rap flow and develop incredible knowledge of the English language for this attention to detail to be acknowledged.

Cristiano Ronaldo remains a world-beater on the football pitch well into his late thirties, but the extra steps he takes to condition himself and outdo other younger teams would not be acknowledged if he hadn’t mastered the basics.

An Oscar-winning actor or actress wouldn’t be praised for an incredibly detailed portrayal of a character if they hadn’t mastered the basics of acting. A musician wouldn’t be praised for detailed improvisation without first knowing everything there is to know about their instrument.

4. Create More Time To Mess Up

It takes time to finish a project while showing extra detail. If you’re rushing to get things done throughout the day, you’re going to make errors and that’s when your work really stands out for lacking attention to detail.

Do you feel limited by tight deadlines? Perhaps it’s time to delegate less important tasks to someone else? Or to convince whoever set these deadlines that you need to take more time to create a masterpiece.

5. Take Steps To Strengthen Your Focus

Perhaps you have the passion, adequate deadlines and pressure from above, but you’re still lacking attention to detail? This may be a problem with your focus.

If so, start using these 11 strategies for developing absolute focus. These are likely to be just what you need to build stronger concentration.

6. Minimize Distractions

This is perhaps one of the most basic ideas for improving focus, yet there are so many people out there still trying to create masterpieces while surrounded by distractions.

Are you one of these people complaining about not having enough time to do anything properly, yet still prioritising their smartphone notifications above their deep work.

Are you trying to perform deep work in an ‘open office’? (which is notoriously horrible for maintaining focus).

In this guide on how to stay focused at work, I explain how I plan my distraction time in advance. I do this by splitting the day into two phases and it has been working really well for me.

7. Lose Your Ego

An individual with a big ego can end up lacking attention to detail for a number of reasons.

A key characteristic of a big ego is assuming that you can do no wrong. These individuals are prone to handing in work without checking deeply for errors.

Big egos don’t want to ask for help from other people. They don’t want to follow others’ instructions, learn anything new or answer to anyone. They think they don’t need anyone to  identify potential errors for them, nor get feedback on where they’re lacking.

If you’re lacking attention to detail, perhaps you need to prioritise losing your ego, accepting that you can make mistakes and that other people’s feedback can help you improve at anything over time.

8. It Could Be A Medical Issue

Do you feel like you‘ve already applied all the tips above, yet you’re still lacking attention to detail. It could be a medical issue.

Consider visiting your GP and explaining the problem to them. They might diagnose you with a condition such as ADHD (or something more serious than this). Either way, this is your first step to getting medical treatment if there’s something inherently wrong with your concentration.

Check out this list of ideas to become a quicker and clearer thinker. It is packed with lifestyle changes that can help you to increase your brain function.

9. Get An Assistant Who Isn’t Lacking Attention To Detail

If you’re struggling to get your shit together, hiring an assistant is a perfectly acceptable alternative to all the solutions listed above.

Of course, this is unlikely to be suitable if you’re an employee who isn’t in charge of hiring, nor if you’re in many creative or athletic positions.

But, there are plenty of scenarios where it would be useful to hand your project over to someone who has a keen eye for small details.

There’s no shame in using an assistant for this. You’ll be stronger together. It won’t fix your lack of attention to detail, but at least the quality of your work will be noticeably better.

Sometimes that’s what’s required to create the right level of quality.

Even the journalists at the world’s most reputable newspapers have every article put through an editor. Sometimes, an article will go through several editors before it gets published.

So, what makes you think you’re too good for your work to have a second pair of eyes on it?
